Privacy Policy

Speak French ("we", "us") operates the Speak French mobile app (com.speakfrench.app) and the website speakfrench.app — a speaking-first AI French tutor for the TEF/TCF Canada exams. This policy explains what we collect, why, and your choices.

Information we collect

• Account details: your phone number and/or email address (used to sign you in), and optionally your name.
• Voice and speech: when you practice speaking, your microphone audio is captured and converted to text so the tutor can understand and respond. We store the conversation transcript so you can review your history; audio is used transiently to generate speech and replay, not kept as a long-term recording.
• Learning data: your level, goals, exam and target date, practice sessions, progress, streaks and results.
• Purchases: subscription and in-app purchase status (processed by Google Play Billing / the App Store / RevenueCat; we do not receive your card details).
• Device data: a push-notification token and basic technical information needed to operate the app.

How we use your information

• To provide the core service — real-time conversation, corrections, coaching, mock exams and progress tracking.
• To sign you in and keep your account secure (including limiting your account to one active device at a time).
• To send your sign-in codes and, if you opt in, practice reminders and your daily coach notification.
• To process subscriptions and exam-pack purchases.

We do not sell your personal information, and we do not use it for third-party advertising.

AI processing — what we send, and to whom

Speak French is an AI tutor: the conversations themselves are powered by third-party AI services. Specifically:

• What is sent: your microphone audio during practice, the text transcripts of what you and the tutor say, your chat messages, and the learning context needed to personalise the lesson (your level, goals and corrections history).
• Who receives it: Microsoft Azure — Azure Speech Services (speech-to-text and text-to-speech) and Azure OpenAI Service (the language model that powers the tutor's replies, corrections and exam scoring).
• Why: solely to run your conversations, generate corrections and feedback, and score mock exams. Not for advertising, and never sold.
• Your permission: the app asks for your explicit consent before your first session, and explains this processing at that time.
• Their protections: Microsoft processes this data under its enterprise data-protection terms — customer data sent to Azure Speech and Azure OpenAI is not used to train Microsoft's or OpenAI's models, and is protected to the same or a stronger standard than this policy.

Service providers we share data with

We share only what's needed with providers that help us run the app:

• Microsoft Azure — speech-to-text, text-to-speech and AI language models (see "AI processing" above).
• Google Play Billing / Apple App Store / RevenueCat — subscription and purchase management.
• Google Firebase — push notifications.
• Our SMS provider — to deliver sign-in codes.

Data retention

We keep your account and learning data while your account is active. You can request deletion at any time (see below), after which we remove your personal data except where we must retain limited records for legal or accounting reasons.

Your rights and choices

• Access / correction: update your profile in the app or contact us.
• Notifications: turn off push notifications in your device settings.

Security

Data is encrypted in transit (HTTPS/TLS and secure WebSockets). We restrict access to personal data and take reasonable measures to protect it.

Children

Speak French is intended for adults preparing for language exams and is not directed to children under 13 (or the minimum age in your country). We do not knowingly collect data from children.

Changes

We may update this policy; material changes will be posted here with a new "last updated" date.
